LSL Senior 1B
Kilbarrack Utd – 2
Hartstown Huntstown – 1
Kilbarrack Utd moved into second place on the LSL Senior 1 B table on Friday night after a well deserved, but hard fought victory over Hartstown Huntstown at Greendale Road. Kilbarrack had the lions share of the chances and only for an inspired goalkeeping performance, the winning margin could have been much greater. That said, only a late penalty ensured that the hosts took all three points on the night.
Kilbarrack started the brighter of the two sides and came close early doors after David Jackson’s corner found Eoin Fowler but his header went just over.
With 20 on the clock and Kilbarrack in control, Anto McKay’s cross from the right presented Fowler with a great chance to open the scoring but his glancing header was well wide. Just a minute later Fowler was again causing problems for the Hartstown Huntstown defence, this time being bundled over in the box with big shouts for a penalty as Mikey Murphy put the spilled ball over the bar but the referee waved the claims away.
Kilbarrack had further chances through Murphy, who shot went over the bar, and Jackson, whose strike fizzed into the side netting and Kilbarrack were rueing missed chances as they went into the break level.
In the second half Kilbarrack picked up where they left off with Adam Fox having a header cleared off the line before minutes later Fowler again being denied, this time from a great save from the visiting keeper.
The opening goal of the game came with 60 on the clock. Anto McKay played a great through ball to set Sean Doyle free and the pacy youngster raced through on goal – his powerful strike was saved but the momentum took the ball over the line to the huge relief of the home support.
The joy of that goal was short lived however when three minutes later, former Verona & St Mochtas man Ian Croft skipped past two challenges before firing low into the far corner to level it up.
Kilbarrack were back on the attack minutes later with McKay’s strike saved by a keeper having a great night. Minutes later up the other end Matt Lyons was called into action, saving with his feet as the game became an end to end affair.
The visiting keeper’s save of the night came with 20 left to play. Anto McKay’s venomous strike was top corner bound until a fingertip save tipped it onto that bar and it fell to safety. Five minutes later the net-minder again denied Fowler with a tip over the bar and it was beginning to look like it wasn’t Kilbarrack’s night.
That all changed with six minutes remaining when the Hartstown Huntstown Keeper went from the night’s hero to villain. Substitute Dylan Travers played a perfectly weighted through ball into the feet of Murphy who flicked it past the keeper but was upended in the process and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
The mercurial Anto McKay stepped up and fired home what turned out to be the winner, giving Kilbarrack all three points and second spot on the LSL Senior 1B table.
