LSL Senior 1B

Kilbarrack Utd – 4

Pegasus St James Ath – 1

Kilbarrack Utd got back to winning ways on Wednesday evening and moved into second place on the LSL Senior 1B table with victory over Pegasus St James Ath at Greendale Road. After two league losses on the bounce, a victory was a must to stay in the title race, and Chris McDonnell’s side put in a spirited second half performance to secure all three points.

The visitors, who are currently second from bottom on the table, got off to a dream start with five minutes on the clock when a cross from the left wing was met by a glancing header that gave Matt Lyons no chance. It didn’t take long for Kilbarrack to restore parity, four minutes later Mikey Murphy slipped in Sean Doyle who slammed home the equaliser.

Up the other end minutes later Lyons had to make a good save to keep the scores level and Kilbarrack knew it wasn’t going to be an easy night’s work.

That said, a flat looking Kilbarrack did have the better of the possession and chances in the half with Murray, Murphy and Fowler all going close but failing to find the net and the sides headed into the break level.

Early in the second half Kilbarrack took the lead. Anto McKay played a great ball over the top for Fowler and as he raced in on goal the goalkeeper hit him with a Karate kick and the referee pointed to the spot. McKay took the responsibility and fired home the penalty.

As the half progressed, it looked like a third goal would be required to kill the game off but Kilbarrack struggled to find it and the game remained on a knife edge.

With 75 on the clock Eoin Fowler was forced to leave the field of play with a blood soaked shirt from a nasty head gash that will most likely require stitches.

It wasn’t until the 84th minute that the victory was sealed. A throw in found Doyle inside the box, he clipped a great ball to the back stick where Murray was on hand to head into the net. Four minutes later Murray put a gloss on the scoreline when his glancing header from a perfectly delivered Murphy corner found the net.

Next up for Kilbarrack is an away date in the Metro Cup against Collinstown on Wednesday 27th Feb.
