Kilbarrack Utd – 1

St Francis FC – 2

Kilbarrack Utd suffered their first home league defeat of the season against St Francis at Greendale Road on Friday night. Kilbarrack had taken the lead on the night, but goals either side of the break without reply saw the visitors take all three points.

The opening 20 minutes were fairly even with both sides feeling each other out and each having speculative efforts on goal.

With 28 on the clock a great ball from Keith Murray found Eoin Fowler in space but a last ditch tackle from a St Francis defender saw the ball poked wide. From the resulting corner the ball found its way to Fowler who fired home the opener from close range.

With five minutes remaining in the half, the visitors restored parity. Keeper Matt Lyons brought down a St Francis attacker and their number 10 slotted home from the resulting penalty and the sides went into the break level.

After the turn Kilbarrack came close to taking the lead on 55 minutes when Anto McKay spotted the keeper off his line and attempted an audacious lob that shaved the top of the crossbar.

Just minutes later the visitors grabbed what proved to be the winner after a well whipped in cross from the left was volleyed home.

Kilbarrack pilled on the pressure thereafter with Fowler gong close on a couple of occasions, as well as a Sean Doyle strike requiring a good save. In the final minutes an Anto Moran long throw bounced around the box before being cleared off the line.

Into the four minutes of added time Kilbarrack threw the kitchen sick at the visitors but could not break a resolute St Francis defence and lost their first home league game of the season and their second league game on the bounce.

Next up for Chris McDonnell’s side is a home tie against Pegasus St James Ath on Wednesday 20th February where they will be looking to get back to winning ways.
